HIS WAYS
A “way” can mean a literal path, prescribed route, or metaphorically as a course of conduct or manner of thinking. Each of us have particular ways we do things and ways we conduct our lives. Scripture teaches God also has his ways. Knowing his ways provides insights into who he is and what he desires. If we are to know him, we must know his ways.
Scripture tells us God’s ways are “higher than our ways and His thoughts than our thoughts.” The Apostle Paul expresses the sovereignty and magnitude of God’s ways, “Oh the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out” (Romans 11:33).
This seems contradictory. How can we know God’s ways if his ways are beyond our ability to comprehend? A closer look at Scripture reveals that although a considerable amount of God’s ways are beyond comprehension and for now will remain a mystery, there is much we can know about the ways of God.
God wants us to know his ways. Moses wanted to know more about God’s ways. So, as he was leading the children of Israel to the Promised Land, he made this petition of God. “If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you” (Exodus 33:13).
From this request of Moses, it is apparent:
- God has specific ways of thinking and acting.
- God’s ways are knowable, but they must be revealed.
- God’s ways reveal his nature and character.
- It pleases God when we follow his ways.
In HIS WAYS, we will look at ten specific ways of God. These “ways” are taught and demonstrated repeatedly throughout Scripture. As we explore them, we will find instructions for living and a deeper understanding of the One who is The Way.
▪ The life skill emphasis of HIS WAYS is the Appointment with God (AWG) habit, which is the foundational skill emphasis in all 8 journals in the Covenant Group Discipleship Series.
HIS WAYS is best used as the 1st journal of the Challenge Series. The Challenge Series (comprised of HIS WAYS, HIS CALLING, and HIS COMMISSION) is the second of two training sets that comprise the Covenant Group Discipleship Series. Each journal takes about 12 weeks to complete, depending on the covenant group meeting schedule.
